Description

This hand turned bowl is made from a Sycamore tree that was removed by tree surgeons in north Manchester as it was growing in ancient woodland and is a non-native species. Turned in a modern iteration of my ale style bowls that were traditionally used for drinking ale from.

This bowl was turned on a vintage Viceroy lathe which was made in Leeds. In the tradition of pole lathe turning, the tool marks are left on the bowls, no sanding is performed, this is to accentuate the tactile surface of the wood. Turned while the wood was green (fresh) and then air dried, allowing the natural movement of the wood to form the final shape. During drying a small crack appeared and was mended with cotton cord.

Finished with a hand rubbed food safe linseed oil/beeswax mixture.

Approximate dimensions:?220mm x 80mm.
